Abstract

This study looks at the importance of obtaining an adult high school diploma. As the population of adults needing educational programs increases, we are faced with more and more funding constraints. This survey continues in the same predilection as earlier research: to protect and increase funding. A 10-question survey was created to determine the relevance of receiving an adult high school diploma. Results were obtained by sending surveys to 232 past graduates of adult high school diploma programs in St. Paul, MN. Surveys were returned by 115 graduates, a nearly 50% return rate. Survey questions asked graduates to comment on issues of employability, post-secondary education, and the value of the graduates' education on family members, most specifically their children. Results were generally very promising with compelling results in several areas. Graduates showed employment gains of 51 %. More than 49% of respondents stated that they had or were continuing their education beyond their adult diploma. Finally, graduates resoundingly described a confidence in helping their children with educational goals that they had not felt prior to receiving their adult high school diploma.
