Collaboration impact, improving computer science documentation

Abstract

The purpose of this thesis and the empirical study upon which it is based is two-fold. First, to explore the impact of collaboration upon computer related documentation. Second, and more importantly, to ascertain whether or not higher order thinking skills can be promoted by involvement in a collaboration project. To address those issues a quarter-long interdisciplinary collaboration project was set up between classes of microcomputer studies and technical writing students. The guiding premise was that both classes would benefit from a practical, "real world" experience. In addition, it was hoped that the "quality," (as described by a readability index, an instructor designed criteria sheet, and two industry judges), of the computer documentation would be improved and that the students would gain experience and insight with regards to use of the higher order thinking skills such as application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation.
