Abstract

This portfolio presents an evaluation of picture books in an elementary school library, focusing on Indigenous representation. The project aims to assess the quantity and quality of Indigenous representation in picture books to better align the library's collection with the diverse demographics of its student population, particularly the 20.1% American Indian students. Through a detailed audit process, the portfolio identifies gaps in representation and provides recommendations for enhancing the collection with authentic Indigenous voices. The significance of this work lies in its potential to improve literacy and cultural understanding among students, fostering a more inclusive reading environment. The findings were shared with stakeholders to advocate for the importance of diverse literature in school libraries.
