Abstract

This exploratory research examined staff perceptions of nursing home resident sexuality in a Midwest state. Members of a social work association were invited to complete an on-line mixed methods survey on their perceptions regarding nursing staff responses to resident sexual behaviors; what factors contributed to how staff responded to resident's sexual behaviors; what guidelines helped staff's decisions about resident sexuality; and whether staff training on resident sexuality. Results indicate the respondents believed nursing home staff responded to resident sexuality subjectively and on a case to case basis, without training, and without clearly articulated sexuality policies to guide them. Information from this study may be useful for administrators, healthcare professionals, and social workers who work with older persons in long term care settings.
