Abstract
Manifold studies report the relations among culturally relevant pedagogy and the academic and social success of students in the classroom. Culturally relevant pedagogy and teaching are essential features of teacher training and of classroom practice. Culturally relevant pedagogy enhances student learning and promotes feelings of community in the classroom. Its methods and the philosophy are student centered and incorporating students’ unique backgrounds, cultures, and life experiences into their educational systems. In addition to fostering students’ sense of belonging, culturally relevant pedagogy can also impact their critical thinking and overall academic performance (Hammond, 2014). This review examines the use of culturally relevant pedagogy with secondary students are diagnosed with emotional behavior disorders. Three questions guide the analysis. First, to what extent and how can culturally relevant improve academic and cognitive performance for students with emotional behavior disorders? Second, does culturally relevant teaching improve the social integration and behavior of special education students with emotional behavior disorders? Third, to what extent could culturally relevant pedagogy play apart in preventing disproportioned representation of students with emotional behavioral, as well as the improvement of teacher efficacy?
