Abstract
Halenbeck Hall at St Cloud State University offers a main gym/pool, a fieldhouse, a climbing wall, and a fitness center. The Fitness Center in Halenbeck is accessible to students, alumni, staff, and faculty members, as well as to the community. The Fitness Center's primary goal is to provide assistance and opportunities to improve health and well-being. The Center offers a large variety of equipment such as rowing machines, weight lifting machines, stationary exercise bikes, linear weight lines, upper body ergometers, step mills, and Cardio Theater. The membership fee per semester is $40 for students, $45 for alumni, and $85 for faculty/staff. The Fitness Center is open Monday through Thursday from 6:30 am to 10:30 pm, Friday from 6:30 am to 9 pm, Saturday from 12 pm to 7 pm, and Sunday from 12 pm to 10:30 pm.
The first purpose of this study is to compare the volume of traffic in the Fitness Center to SCSU class schedules. The second purpose is to compare the academic performance of students who use the Fitness Center and those who do not, by considering average semester GPA, average cumulative GPA, average semester credits attempted, average cumulative credits attempted, and QPP (Quality Points Predicted). The third purpose is to assess the impact of academic breaks on the usage of the Fitness Center.
